SAG-AFTRA Dues and Initiation Fee 2026

As of November 2026, joining SAG-AFTRA costs a one-off national initiation fee of $3,121 (lower in some states), then base dues of $246.14 a year plus work dues of 1.575% of your union earnings, calculated on earnings up to $1,000,000. You pay the fee and your first semiannual dues when you join. Below is how each charge works, when it is billed and how actors spread the cost, checked on sagaftra.org and explained by our SAG-AFTRA experts.

How much does it cost to join SAG-AFTRA?

There are three charges: a one-off initiation fee, base dues every year, and work dues, which are a small percentage of what you earn on union jobs. Here they are as of November 2026, from SAG-AFTRA's membership costs page.

How much is the SAG-AFTRA initiation fee?

The national initiation fee is $3,121 as of November 2026. SAG-AFTRA says it "may be lower in some states", but its costs page doesn't list the local amounts, and its steps to join page asks you to contact your nearest local so they can tell you your joining fees.

Some older union Q&A pages still quote earlier rates, so go by the current costs page. You pay the fee once, when you join; our page on how to join SAG-AFTRA covers the timing.

How much are SAG-AFTRA dues each year?

Annual base dues are $246.14 as of November 2026. Every member pays them, whether you worked ten union days last year or none.

The union's membership Q&A explains that dues are paid twice a year and are calculated from a small percentage of the prior year's earnings. That's the base dues amount plus work dues, which is why your bill can change from one period to the next.

What are work dues, and is there a cap?

Work dues are 1.575% of your SAG-AFTRA covered earnings, and the calculation stops at $1,000,000 of earnings.

Some quick maths:

  • $10,000 of union earnings in a year: about $157.50 in work dues.
  • $50,000: about $787.50.
  • $1,000,000 or more: the most it can reach, about $15,750.

Work dues are worked out from the previous year's earnings. The union asked members to report their 2025 earnings by 5 March 2026, so check your income statement each year.

When are SAG-AFTRA dues billed?

Dues are billed twice a year. SAG-AFTRA's notices refer to a May dues period and a November dues period, and new members pay their first semiannual dues when they join.

You can pay online. The union doesn't publish a fixed due date on its current pages, so pay each bill promptly. Its maintaining your membership page warns that if dues become delinquent you may not be cleared for work, and that failing to pay percentage dues can end your membership.

How much does a SAG card cost in total?

On the day you join, a SAG card costs the initiation fee ($3,121 at the national rate, possibly less in your state) plus your first semiannual dues bill. After that, you pay base dues of $246.14 a year plus 1.575% of your union earnings.

Ben Whitehair points out the silver lining: the union job that makes you a "must join" usually pays, and that pay can go straight towards the fee.

Kym's view in Journey step 8 is that SAG-eligible is a good place to sit for as long as your career allows, so you can keep taking both union and non-union jobs. Our SAG-eligible page explains that status.

Is there a payment plan for the SAG-AFTRA initiation fee?

Yes, there are options. SAG-AFTRA's membership Q&A says there are payment plan options and tells you to check with membership services to see if a plan is available to you.

The union's costs page also points to two credit unions that lend for the initiation fee, as of November 2026:

  • SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union: initiation fee loans with terms of up to 24 months. You need to be, or become, a credit union member, and the page says income verification isn't required in most cases.
  • Actors Federal Credit Union: the loan can't be more than the current initiation fee, and you keep 5% of the loan value in a savings account. The rate depends on the term you pick.

Ben's advice in our library matches: talk to the credit union first, then call the SAG-AFTRA main line to ask what else is available.

Do minors or members of other unions pay less?

We found no separate, cheaper rate for minors on sagaftra.org. Young performers join through the same eligibility routes, and the union's young performers handbook notes one exception to joining at all: before age 4, a child can work under SAG-AFTRA contracts without joining.

Child acting expert Karen Workman shares in our library that one of her children wasn't able to get paid on a third union commercial until she joined. So plan for the fee once a child is booking union work regularly.

If you're a paid-up member of ACTRA, Equity (AEA), AGMA or AGVA, that membership can make you eligible to join, but SAG-AFTRA's joining page doesn't mention any fee reduction. Ask your local before you budget.

Can I stop paying dues if I take a break?

Yes, through inactive status. SAG-AFTRA's maintaining your membership page describes two kinds:

  • Honorable Withdrawal: available when your dues are current. Semiannual base dues stop, but you're still billed dues on any residuals or other deferred income.
  • Suspended Payment: for members who owe one or two dues periods. To come back, you pay what you owed plus current dues and fees.

Our guest expert describes withdrawal as putting your membership on pause, so you can step away for a long stretch and come back without giving it up.

Long-time members may also qualify for a senior dues waiver: age 70 by 30 April of the dues year, at least 20 years as a dues-paying member, and $10,000 or less in union earnings in the dues period.

The short version

  • Joining costs a one-off $3,121 national initiation fee (possibly less in your state) plus your first semiannual dues, as of November 2026.
  • Every member pays $246.14 a year in base dues, billed twice a year.
  • Work dues are 1.575% of union earnings, calculated on earnings up to $1,000,000, based on the previous year.
  • Credit union loans and union payment plans can spread the initiation fee out.
  • Honorable Withdrawal pauses base dues if you step away, and unpaid dues can stop you being cleared for work.
