Casting Directors Who Would Have Been Nominated for an Oscar, 2006 to 2024

Until 2026 there was no Academy Award for casting. From 2015 we kept a list anyway: every casting director whose film was nominated for best picture, directing or one of the four acting awards, year by year, as a thank you to the people who built those casts. The Academy added an award for Achievement in Casting in February 2024 and gave the first one on 15 March 2026 to Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another. Her name is on this page for three films: There Will Be Blood, The Master and Her. This is the record of who would have been in the running before the award existed.

Compiled by Secret Actor Society from the Academy's nominations each year, 2006 to 2024 (we skipped 2017 to 2019), and kept here as published. Casting directors are listed as credited at the time; from 2016 the lists also include the local, regional and associate casting directors who filled out each cast. If you spot a missing name or a misspelling, email questions@secretactorsociety.com and we will fix it.

The first casting Oscar, March 2026

The Academy announced the award for Achievement in Casting on 8 February 2024 and presented it for the first time at the 98th Academy Awards on 15 March 2026, for films released in 2025. Members of the Casting Directors Branch vote for up to ten films, and the ten with the most votes are eligible to be nominated. The five nominees were Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another (the winner), Nina Gold for Hamnet, Jennifer Venditti for Marty Supreme, Gabriel Domingues for The Secret Agent and Francine Maisler for Sinners.

Three of those five names run right through the lists below. Nina Gold is here for The King's Speech, Les Misérables, The Imitation Game, 1917 and The Two Popes among others, and Francine Maisler for Milk, Birdman, The Revenant, Marriage Story and Little Women. Sources: Academy Award for Achievement in Casting and Spotlight, Oscars 2026 winners, both read on 6 November 2026.

Quick answers

Is there an Academy Award for casting?

Yes, since 2026. The Academy announced the award for Achievement in Casting in February 2024 and presented the first one on 15 March 2026, for films released in 2025, to Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another.

Why was there no Oscar for casting directors before 2026?

Casting was the only major department on a film without its own Academy Award until the Casting Directors Branch, formed in 2013, secured one. For the twenty years before that, this page is the closest thing to a list of who would have been nominated.

How were these lists put together?

Each year since 2015, Secret Actor Society took the Academy's nominees for best picture, directing and the four acting awards and listed the casting directors credited on each film. From 2016 the lists also include local, regional and associate casting directors.

Which casting directors appear most on this page?

Counted one entry per nominated film, Francine Maisler, Avy Kaufman, Nina Gold, Ellen Lewis, Mary Vernieu appear most often across 2006 to 2024.
